1. Hawaii Covering Kids Back-to-School 2002 Last August's "Kids Health Insurance Week" was a grand success--so what is this year's hana hou? Our task force is organizing a "Get Teenagers Covered by Health Insurance" campaign targeting adolescents because they are the largest uninsured group among 0 to 19 year olds. So far our plans include:
a. News Conference/Outreach Event. Hawaii Covering Kids and the Hawaii State Department of Education will sponsor a news conference with the superintendent and other state and community officials to kick off a statewide effort to provide health insurance information at all forty-two public high schools statewide.
b. Outreach Activity. Covering Kids bookmarks and Hawaii Covering Kids pencils with the local hotline number will be included in Ready to Learn school supplies packets.
c. Outreach Activity. Posters will be hung in all 525 buses on Oahu throughout August to promote free health insurance for children and youth. Riders will be encouraged to call our hotline service for additional information.
d. Media Outreach Activity on August 10 and 11. Hawaii Covering Kids, American Academy of Pediatrics-Hawaii Chapter, and Hawaii Immunization Coalition will host a booth at the Keiki Fair held at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Live remote will be provided on Saturday by I-94 (93.9 FM radio). Local businesses will partner with Hawaii Covering Kids from August 1 to 12 to advertise the booth through Island Rhythm (98.5 FM radio). Informational materials and giveaways will promote the state's free health insurance programs for youth.
Special thank you to Hawaii Community Foundation for funding our adolescent outreach campaign. Stay tuned for more information!
2. Two-Page Flyer with New 211 Hotline Telephone Number Updated versions can be downloaded at Flyers and Media Outreach Campaigns.
3. Partnership News from Our National Covering Kids & Families Office National organizations are working with Covering Kids & Families to inform parents and their trusted advisors about available health insurance and Covering Kids & Families' work. Here is a brief overview:
a. National Education Association (NEA). The NEA included Covering Kids print PSAs in its "Floppy Copy." Floppy Copy is camera-ready art sent to the editors of 7,000 NEA newsletters, potentially reaching 2.7 million members who teach more than 30 million children.
b. Working closely with Catholic Charities USA, Covering Kids developed faith-based outreach materials that explain the importance of health insurance for children, including the hard choices parents of uninsured children often face, and offer concrete ways for ministries to get involved. Now, Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) and Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) are sharing this information about low-cost and free health insurance. CCUSA distributed these materials to 100 of their social ministries in communities across the country. PCUSA distributed 600 copies of the materials at its general assembly this June. For more details go to Children's Health Matters.
c. American Hospital Association (AHA). Hot off the press! A July issue of AHA NEWS NOW features a four-page pullout section on Covering Kids to encourage hospitals to get involved in CHIP and Medicaid outreach. AHA's members include almost 5,000 hospitals, health care systems, networks, and other providers of care, as well as 37,000 individuals in the health care field nationwide.
d. National League of Cities. Through emails and its newsletter, Nation's City Weekly, the National League of Cities is encouraging its members to get involved in Back-to-School outreach. The newsletter is sent to 30,000 municipal leaders.
e. American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This week, AAFP and AAP are sending letters to their state chapters encouraging members to get involved in Back-to-School 2002. The letter provided simple suggestions that physicians can take to reach families like enlisting the help of office managers in distributing information to self-paying patients and posting flyers in office waiting and examining rooms.
f. United Way of America. The United Way of America is distributing Back-to-School listserv announcements to local chapters. Their goal is to encourage partnerships between members and Covering Kids coalitions for planning community outreach activities.
