1. Med-QUEST Eligibility Isn't Exciting...But We'll Try to Make It Interesting! This is a friendly reminder about our free workshop "How to Complete Med-QUEST's Application and Renewal Forms" for administrators and policymakers to learn basic QUEST and Medicaid eligibility information. It is similar to the popular community training workshops we sponsor for outreach workers and it will be held in Honolulu on Thursday, 6 October 2005 from 10:00-11:30 am. For more details, go to our calendar and click: Coalition Meeting: State.
2. Children and Youth Month Our state and local projects are participating in several events during October to celebrate Children and Youth Month. For an overall view of what's happening on Oahu, go to: Event Calendar.
3. Unworried Parents of Well Children: A Look at Uninsured Children Who Reportedly Don't Need Health Insurance Data from the 2001 National Survey of Children With Special Health Care Needs were used to examine the characteristics of uninsured children from low-income households whose parents reported that health insurance was not needed. Stephen Blumberg, Kathleen O'Connor (from the National Center of Health Statistics), and Genevieve Kenney documented that nearly seven percent of parents of uninsured children from low-income households stated their children did not need health insurance. The researchers conclude that expanding participation in public health insurance programs for this population may require more than simply increasing knowledge about the availability of programs. Pediatrics; August 2005; 116(2): 345-351
4. Medicaid Cuts on Hold Budget instructions could call for cuts of $10 billion in federal dollars for the Medicaid program over five years. The postponement of the budget reconciliation process means Congress will take longer to identify how to make these cuts and some are saying this is no time to make any cuts at all in Medicaid and other social programs that provide assistance to families trying to rebuild their lives. Go to Urgent Alert.
