09/00 Minutes
Thursday, 8 September 2000 Evaluation
Present: Kathy Sthay, Bill Wood, Andrew Aoki, Marica Hartsock, Supin Wongbusarakum, and Barbara Luksch
Next meeting: Friday, 3 November 2000 at 9:00 AM.
1. We will discuss with Charlene Gaspar the DOH data match a printout of national data given by Kids Count. Marcia's handout on health insurance for children and youth (ages 0-17) and poverty levels can be downloaded in PDF format: Hot Happenings: Data.
2. Bill outlined in detail his upcoming report on data available to measure the number of uninsured children and youth ages 0 to 19 years. Ideally the DOE will implement statewide electronic registration including emergency card information but in the interim we could pilot MacSchool software available to school health aides.
3. We discussed identifying school-community profiles using data from school lunch recipients, responses to school lunch outreach, and uninsured numbers. The long-term approach to school lunch outreach is the DOE and Med-QUEST developing system links authorized by the federal government.
4. Kathy explained Healthy Child Care Hawaii. The DOH Maternal and Child Health Branch grant ended and the American Academy of Pediatrics Hawai'i Chapter applied to continue it. Community pediatricians talk with parents and teachers in preschools on health topics to promote positive dialogue among the groups. It will start October through pilots with Head Start and UH Pre-School.
5. Andrew explained HMSA's coalition on uninsured focused on reducing the numbers. They will first sponsor a conference in November. Note: Colorado has a coalition with a Web site at http://www.ccmu.org/.
6. Is it possible to have the same questions on all state surveys: insurance information, telephone access, and permanent residence? Great follow-up idea!
